Adaptations neuromusculaires des muscles extenseurs du genou : contractions fatigantes uni- vs bi-latérales
2010
The aim of this work was to determine i) the influence of the level of absolute force on the duration of the endurance time, and subsequent neuromuscular alterations in same individual at the end of an exercise performed at the same relative intensity, with one or two legs, ii) the influence of central drive on the force capacity production of the knee extensor muscles during unilateral (UL) vs. bilateral (BL) contractions, iii) activation mechanisms evolution for a serie of submaximal evoked contractions by electrostimulation (EMS). The results of the first study confirm that the endurance limit depends on the level of absolute force for the same individual, contraction duration for UL is …
Alternative methods for strength development : the case of motor imagery and neuromuscular electrical stimulation
2020
An intense practice of resistance training, i.e. with heavy loads and a low number of repetitions, can cause injuries. To avoid them or limit detraining after an injury, alternative training methods have been developed. These methods have a double target since they also allow populations with different pathologies to practice a physical activity. This thesis focused particularly on the neuromuscular system and the mechanisms involved in strength development on plantar flexors muscles following motor imagery (MI), i.e. mental simulation of a movement without its concomitant motor output, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), i.e. evoking contractions through electrical current app…
Analysis and control of the muscle force by electrostimulation
2019
Muscle reconditioning techniques have been developed extensively in these recent years as part of the reeducation of the atrophied muscle, but also to reinforce the healthy muscle of the sedentary or sportive subject. The monitoring of the stimulated muscle by recording the electrical activity and the muscle response is necessary to detect for example the muscle fatigue and/or avoid tissue damage in the case of deconditioned muscle. The aim of this thesis is initially to analyse the muscle response in terms of force produced as response to the electrostimulation (ES). This analysis has allowed us to develop a new force model that can predict the effect of the stimulation amplitude of the cu…
Hip muscle function in patients with symptomatic femoroacetabular impingement
2014
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a pathomechanical process of the hip joint, which could lead to hip pain and functional disability. Aim of this thesis was to investigate hip muscle function in patients with a symptomatic FAI. Hip muscle function was first investigated before patients underwent any surgical treatment for managing FAI. It was shown that they present with reduced hip muscle strength (i.e., muscle weakness), probably due to hip muscle inhibition. Nevertheless, hip muscle weakness was not associated with exaggerated hip muscle fatigue. Hip muscle strength recovery was then evaluated in a series of patients after hip arthroscopy to treat FAI. These patients demonstrated a g…
